Dentalvillage is the place to come to for information about Minimally Invasive Dentistry [MID] and preventive dentistry.
"The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease." Thomas A. Edison
MID is a new way of looking at the main dental problems that affect people and it seeks to prevent and treat using a more targeted approach that should lead to less fillings.
Caries is managed as an infectious disease, preventing and minimising operative intervention as much as possible. The focus is on maximum conservation of de-mineralised,non-cavitated enamel and dentine. Once control of the infection is achieved, the patient’s caries risk status and evidence of lesion demineralisation can be monitored over extended periods. These principles can also be applied to the treatment and management of periodontal disease. Minimally Invasive Periodontal Management relies heavily on patient involvement, ownership and management of their own disease. The patient reduces their own inflammation under guidance of the clinician and operative treatment is kept as minimal as possible.
Here you can find up to date information on this fresh approach to preventing dental decay and periodontal [gum] diseases.
For dental professionals there's a dedicated section containing all the latest information on MID. We're also offering in-practice courses to help you implement and get the best out of MID.
We also have a sister site, medicalvillage.co.uk. A website for promoting the relationship between oral health and general health.

New Research - Social Inequalities in Childhood Caries
Tim has found this interesting article from the US looking at the impact of socioeconomic status [SES] on childhood caries. One of the authors is John Featherstone, a well known cariologist in the US and one of the biggest influencers on our dentalvillage philosophy. There is much relevance with the UK situation. The recent Child Dental Health study found that lower SES groups have some 3x more caries than the national average. The full article is available to read and/or download from the excellent National Institutes of Public Health Access site in the US. You can read the article here .
